PCD Student Represents School at Statewide Poetry Out Loud Competition
Providence Country Day School student Gretchen D .'26 was named this year’s Poetry Out Loud school champion, earning the opportunity to represent PCD at the statewide competition earlier this month.
Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation program that encourages students to engage deeply with poetry through memorization and performance. A dedicated participant, Gretchen has taken part in the program every year since her freshman year, steadily refining her craft and deepening her connection to the material. This year, she stood out for her thoughtful, dynamic interpretations and her ability to bring a modern, conversational voice to each piece.
"When choosing poems, I look for poems that have a lot of potential to be performed," said Gretchen. "The poems I chose this year were very conversational, so it makes it easier to perform them and convey the tone that I want to."
Following her win, Gretchen advanced to the Rhode Island state competition, where she performed alongside students from across the state. Her poised presence and authentic delivery reflected both her dedication to the craft and her connection to the material.
PCD is proud of Gretchen for representing the school community with such distinction and for sharing her voice on a larger stage. Check out excerpts from her performance here.
