For the first time in school history, six seniors - Callula Hart, Kim Jin, Cole Kilgus, Kalila Sobral-Mier, Jay Xie and Leo Zhao - will be pursuing prestigious art schools in the fall. College acceptances among the group feature the best art and design programs in the country including Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
For many of the students, pursuing a path in the arts wasn't an obvious choice but cite the PCD art program's attentive instruction, one-on-one mentorship, and encouraging peer community for helping them select the creative track.
Cole Kilgus will study industrial design at Savannah College of Art and Design and credits Visual Arts Teacher Jennifer Karl for helping him discover the growing discipline. "Mrs. Karl recognized that I was good at ceramics and 3D art and introduced me to the RISD pre-college program where I discovered industrial design and really enjoyed it. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be where I am today, and I now know I can move toward a career that I can really enjoy."
Visual Arts Teacher Jen Karl says she's excited to see how each student continues to progress in their respective collegiate art programs.. "I can't wait to see them all blossom as artists. They'll have opportunities to explore all different kinds of mediums and it will help them identify who they are as an artist."
