Tom Horvat '14 has escalated his athletic career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a star basketball player. He became the 14th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points when he scored 30 to lead the RPI Engineers to a 75-70 victory over Skidmore College on January 27. The junior guard now has 1,020 points over the course of three seasons and ranks 12th in program history. The Liberty League recently named him Men's Basketball "Performer of the Week."
At PCD, Horvat was a two-time captain, where he was All-NEPSAC and First Team twice in basketball. He was also All-SENE three times and was a standout in soccer and baseball. Horvat was All-Division First Team three times and All-State as a senior in soccer and All-SENE twice in baseball. He also reached the one thousandth point milestone at PCD. Only twelve PCD students have ever hit the number and Tom was the first to have accomplished it as a junior.
"Tom was one of the best pure athletes to come out of Providence Country Day. He excelled as a multi-sport athlete and was also one of the fiercest competitors I've coached," says Marquis Harper, PCD athletic director. "He always seemed to have ice water in his veins, as he was the guy who could hit that clutch shot or free throw, or make the game winning base hit. Players like him don't come around very often."
